Kane goes into a strong but fair challenge on Walker-Peters. There was some anger in that tackle, which is probably not surprising given how lacklustre his teammates have been here. An inspirational half-time team talk from the Spurs captain could do the trick, perhaps.

Another menacing attack from Southampton as Djenepo plays the ball into the overlapping Bertrand on the left. His low cross is just about dealt with by Lloris.

Adams then picks up a booking for stopping Lloris from distributing quickly.

Ings looks to be picking up where he left off last season. That was a superb finish, though Lloris might feel he could have done better. Spurs can’t have many complaints about falling behind, though. The hosts have been on top for much of the first half, even if they’ve given away some chances.

Brilliant from Ings! Walker-Peters lifts a ball over the top of Dier’s head, and the Southampton striker is onto it, bringing it down with an immaculate first touch and then driving a low shot into the far corner from a tight angle. 

The lively Djenepo cuts in from the left and gets a shot off. It’s charged down, but the winger has been a constant threat so far. Ings is then allowed to drive towards the box far too easily, though his pass to Ward-Prowse is badly overhit.

Kane has another goal ruled out! Lucas is played in with a ball over the top and squares for Kane, who has an easy finish from a few yards out. The former was offside, though. Officials are delaying their decisions now because of VAR, so we’ll probably see plenty of goals disallowed throughout the season.

Close! Ward-Prowse swings a free kick into the box and it’s cleared only as far as Djenepo, who hits a first-time shot with his left foot which slams against the outside of the post.

Big chance! Djenepo does brilliantly, dribbling down the left, beating Doherty at the byline and then pulling the ball back for Adams. The striker delays his shot, and then sees it blocked from close range. Ward-Prowse then mis-hits his effort on the rebound, allowing Lloris to claw the ball away. Nervy moments for Spurs.

McCarthy races out to clear a ball over the top before the menacing Son can latch onto it. Both teams are leaving spaces in behind, so it’d be a surprise to see this stay goalless for much longer.
